NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – During a training exercise at Mount Bundey on Monday, a military vehicle rollover resulted in the death of a 28-year-old Australian Army soldier. The same incident caused injuries to five additional soldiers. The Australian Defence Force confirmed the event on Tuesday, notifying the soldier’s family. The accident happened at the Mount Bundey Training Area, situated approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Darwin. Defence requested that the public respect the privacy of the affected personnel and their families.

At around 4:20 p.m. on October 5, Northern Territory Police responded to the training site. Emergency services, including CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance, also arrived at the scene. Two injured soldiers were airlifted by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at about 7:30 p.m., while three others were transported by aircraft around 9:30 p.m. All five soldiers continued receiving hospital care on Tuesday. Authorities from the Northern Territory supported the medical evacuations from the isolated military training area.
Chief of Army Lieutenant General Susan Coyle stated that Defence has initiated an investigation into the fatal rollover. Military police secured the scene, and a land accident investigation board will review the incident. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole noted that police are assisting Defence and conducting an investigation on behalf of the coroner. The cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed. Coyle added that investigators require time to determine the circumstances before the Army responds to their findings.
Investigation by Defence underway
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen soldier. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles also conveyed his sympathies, describing the loss as a tragic event for the Army. Defence announced that it is supporting the families of everyone involved in the incident. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also extended her condolences and thanked emergency teams for their efforts in transferring the injured soldiers from Mount Bundey to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mount Bundey functions as a significant Australian Army training facility located south-east of Darwin. The area hosts exercises for Australian and allied forces, including live-fire drills. The recent death follows another tragic incident earlier in 2026, when Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, a soldier from the Special Air Service Regiment, lost his life after a mid-air collision during parachute training at Jervis Bay. Another paratrooper involved in that event survived with minor injuries.
Previous fatalities at Mount Bundey
In 2017, Mount Bundey also was the site of a fatal Army training accident when Private Jason Challis died during a live-fire urban exercise. A subsequent coronial inquest by the Northern Territory examined the circumstances surrounding his death. The Department of Defence later pleaded guilty in Darwin Local Court to failing to meet workplace health and safety duties. The 2026 rollover is unrelated and remains under investigation.
Beyond confirming the soldier’s age and gender, Defence has not publicly identified the individual who was killed in Monday’s incident. The unit or specific activity underway at the time has not been disclosed. The Australian Defence Force assured that further details would be shared when available. Police continue to support the coronial investigation, and the Army is conducting its internal probe. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the rollover or identify factors that led to the fatal crash.
